What is the mission of Southern California Against Forced Treatment?

Our mission is to abolish any type of forced or coerced psychiatric treatment, including confinement in psychiatric institutions, forcible medication, electroshock therapy, and involuntary outpatient treatment. Southern California Against Forced Treatment supports all survivors of forced psychiatric treatment and protects the self-determination, civil rights, and liberty of all people.

Is Southern California Against Forced Treatment affiliated with any political party?

No. There are members of Southern California Against Forced Treatment from a wide range of political parties and affiliations.

Is Southern California Against Forced Treatment anti-psychiatry?

No. Many members of Southern California Against Forced Treatment choose to take psychiatric medications, see psychiatrists, and seek mental health treatment in psychiatric hospitals. Southern California Against Forced Treatment respects the right of each individual to make informed decisions about their own treatment. The only issue that the group takes a stance on is the use of force and coercion. We do not view forced treatment as a mental health issue but as a human rights issue.

While Southern California Against Forced Treatment advocates for the complete abolition of all types of forced psychiatric interventions, we welcome anyone who would like to reduce the use of forced treatment and support survivors of forced treatment to attend any of our meetings. We would be happy to work with you to provide resources and information on alternatives to forced treatment and crisis de-escalation strategies.
